Gower AM Rebecca Evans is backing an innovative Welsh Government drive to increase the understanding of coding in Welsh schools. The Welsh Labour Government has announced significant funding, aimed at giving pupils access to training in the latest technology.
The announcement meets a pledge in last year’s Welsh Labour Manifesto, and is more evidence of Welsh Labour acting quickly to meet their promises. Rebecca Evans AM said: “This investment is about equipping future generations with the skills that will help them compete in a global market. This is truly 21st century technology, and Wales has to be at the forefront. “We live in an increasingly digital world and the evidence suggests that there will be 100,000 new coding jobs created in the UK by 2020. I want Wales to host as many of these jobs as possible. “This is yet another positive example of our Welsh Labour Government delivering on pledges that I, and others, stood on last year.” With the planning for Heathrow expansion already underway, Heathrow is lining up SMEs from across the UK to help deliver the multi-billion-pound project. Heathrow has announced that it will host a Business Summit in partnership with the Welsh Government on July 5th at the Cardiff City Stadium. Heathrow have emphasised its commitment to creating jobs in every corner of the UK by committing to a programme of six regional Business Summits in 2017. Earlier this year, Heathrow launched a new sustainability strategy, Heathrow 2.0, which committed to establishing Heathrow Business Summits in all 12 regions of the UK by 2025. SMEs already play a crucial role in Heathrow’s supply chain – with the airport spending over £1.5 billion annually with more than 1,200 suppliers from around the UK – and their role is set to grow with the expansion. Construction of the new runway will become the UK’s largest infrastructure project and SMEs will be critical to delivering the £16 billion investment. The Business Summits will be series of ‘speed-dating’ sessions which will give businesses from Cardiff to Caernarfon access to Heathrow’s largest suppliers. The face-to-face meetings are designed to give SMEs a chance to cement relationships and forge new connections with some of the UK’s largest suppliers which could also be leveraged for further work outside of Heathrow’s expansion project. Each Business Summit is a one day event with 15minute face-to-face appointments between suppliers and buyers, including Amalga, Arup, Balfour Beatty, BEUMER Group, Ferrovial, Mace, Morgan Sindall, Turner & Townsend, UK Power Networks Services and Vanderlane Industries UK Lt. We will work with the supply chain for innovative and affordable solutions.” Rebecca Evans AM, Assembly Member for Gower, will be holding an advice surgery on Friday 16th June, between 10am – 11am, at Tircoed Village Hall.

Rebecca Evans AM, Assembly Member for Gower, is encouraging micro and small size businesses in Gower employing fewer than 50 full time equivalent employees to apply for support from the new Micro Small Business Fund which has been announced by Welsh Government.
Rebecca Evans said: “This is a new investment fund aimed at supporting capital investment projects in the tourism sector in Wales. Tourism is a key industry in Gower, and I would like to see local businesses making the most of this investment opportunity." Support of between £25,000 and £500,000 will be considered in order to create and safeguard jobs; realise economic benefit and growth; and deliver quality, innovation and a sense of place. Rebecca Evans added: “This is another clear sign of the Welsh Government's commitment and support for small businesses in Wales, which I welcome wholeheartedly. I know that there are micro and small businesses in Gower which would benefit from this fund, and I would urge them to explore the potential of this investment to help them grow."
