Assembly Member for Gower, Rebecca Evans, has welcomed the announcement of £4.4 million of funding from the Welsh Government to support front-line advice services in 2017-18.
£2.2 million of the funding will support the delivery of services which can offer direct advice relating to welfare benefits, housing, debt, money management and discrimination. A further £2.2 million will be awarded to Citizens Advice Cymru to deliver the Better Advice, Better Lives Scheme. The scheme encourages benefit take-up for families with disabled children, for those living in deprived areas whose health is likely to be affected by poverty, and for council tax and housing benefits. Rebecca Evans AM said: "I very much welcome this funding which will support what is a valuable resource for constituents across Gower. "The benefits system can be complex and confusing, and problems relating to the UK Government's welfare reform are commonplace at my surgeries, particularly amongst people seeking work and people on low wages. Disabled people have been very badly affected. "Expert advice on housing issues and debt problems is also valuable, so that people can maximize their ability to manage their household budgets. A little bit of help can make a big difference." Swansea Carers Centre currently has Carers Trust funding to provide a project for Young Adult Carers (YAC). The project is for young people aged between 16-25 years old who have/had the responsibility for looking after a family member or friend who could not cope without their support (and are unpaid). The next Young Adult Carers event is on Thursday 23rd February at Tapestri 10.30-2.30pm. Address: Llys Glas (Old Police Station), Orchard Street, Swansea SA1 5AJ The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of the project and other services that can support Young Adult Carers in the Swansea area, and to provide some enjoyable activities and workshops for young adult carers who don’t get a lot of opportunities to do anything enjoyable for themselves. It is not a fundraising event, just an opportunity for enjoyment and to make young adult carers aware of the support available to them. The event will have a free buffet Lunch as well as fun and creative taster sessions that young people can take part in such as Chinese boxing, self-defence, breathe and relax plus other creative activities. Swansea Carers Centre are welcoming all young people 16-25 who may or may not be carers to the event on Thursday 23rd Feb. Friends and family are welcome to attend too…the more the merrier. BT is expanding its customer service contact centre by creating 100 new jobs, with support from the Welsh Government. Rebecca Evans said: "From helping small home grown enterprises with their business rates, to attracting major foreign companies to invest in Wales, Welsh Government works hard all year round to support business. "This is important because we know what a difference having job makes people - from offering a better quality of life to helping promote good mental health. "The Swansea BT jobs announcement is one of the first in a week of exciting news about new jobs being created right across Wales because of Welsh Government support." BT is creating the new roles in order to meet its commitment to answering 90 per cent of its customers’ calls in the UK by April 2017. The new recruits will work at BT Tower in Swansea where an additional floor will be refurbished and refitted to accommodate the new business. Labour Assembly Members, Rebecca Evans, David Rees, Jeremy Miles, Mike Hedges, Julie James, Lee Waters, Joyce Watson and Eluned Morgan - who represent constituencies in south and west Wales - have shown their support for LGBT history month. The AMs firmly believe that no one should ever be discriminated against or treated unfairly due to their sexuality or their gender identity. They warn that LGBT progress cannot be taken for granted. The Assembly Members said: “Attitudes towards lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people have been transformed for the better in the last 20 years, but we cannot take these advances for granted and we cannot be complacent. Intolerance is rising across the world and it is essential that we continue to stand up for, respect, and value diversity.” Rebecca Evans AM, has spent time at Forge Fach Resource Centre in Clydach, finding out about how the centre is contributing to the life of the community. Forge Fach is a new model for social enterprise and disability inclusion built-in, around, and with the local community. Used daily by the whole community, it offers a wide range of health and wellbeing activities, adult education courses and children's activities, as well as a day nursery, a digital cinema and popular cafe. Rebecca Evans said: "Forge Fach is at the heart of the local community, offering a wealth of opportunities for people to get involved in lifelong learning and wellbeing activities. "It is a really valuable resource, and there really is something for everyone." Matthew Bailey, Manager, said: "It was a pleasure to be able to showcase the wide range of activities we have here at Forge Fach, and to share our ambitious and exciting plans for the future. "Here at Forge Fach, we work hard to help make Clydach community vibrant and fun - and we have a warm welcome for everyone!" |
