Rebecca Evans AM has congratulated pupils across Gower on their GCSE results, and thanked teachers for the commitment and dedication they show.

This summer’s results mark the end of the significant GCSE reform journey undertaken in Wales. The last seven reformed GCSE subjects have been awarded this year including History, Computer Science and Welsh Second Language.

Overall performance across Wales has improved.

Rebecca Evans AM said: “Congratulations to pupils across Gower on their achievements today. I wish them all well in the future, whatever path they choose to take.

“Reforming and modernising qualifications is a major undertaking, and can only succeed when the change is being delivered by passionate and skilled staff. It is only right that we recognise the hard work of teachers too.”

AM congratulates students

15/8/2019

Gower AM, Rebecca Evans, has congratulated A-level students across Gower on their A level and Welsh Baccalaureate results.

Across Wales, the top A* to A grades at A-level increased this year to 27%, from 26.3% in 2018, a historic high.

The provisional results show Wales improve in ranking for all grades and to first for A*, compared to English regions and Northern Ireland.

Welsh Baccalaureate students also performed well. For the Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate, equivalent in size and demand to an A level, 4.6% of students achieved an A* grade, a significant rise from 1.6% in 2017.

Rebecca Evans AM said, “These results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our young people, and the passion of our teaching staff.

“It is wonderful to see young people reaching their potential. The great results in Maths and Science are particularly notable, showing that our focus on giving young people the skills and knowledge to meet the needs of future industries is having an impact.

“For anyone who is feeling disappointed today, please remember that there is plenty of good help and advice available, and don’t forget - there is a big, exciting world of opportunity out there for you.”

Gower Assembly Member, Rebecca Evans AM, is making families aware of the Welsh Government’s grant to assist people on low incomes in buying school uniform and equipment for their children.

Rebecca Evans AM said: “Affordability of school uniforms is crucial for families, especially for those who are being hit hard after nine years of austerity.”

Learners in receipt of free school meals can receive the grant if they are entering primary school in Reception, Year 3, Year 7, or Year 10. Pupils in special schools and pupil referral units will be eligible when entering Reception and Year 7. The funding is also available to all Looked After Children of compulsory school age.

Funding of up to £125 is available for each eligible learner with the exception of those entering Year 7 who will be entitled to a maximum of £200.

Mrs Evans added: “Constituents, including pupils themselves, have raised the importance of affordability of school uniforms with me. Looking forward to a new year at school shouldn’t be overshadowed by worry about how to pay for uniforms and essential kit. The Welsh Government is committed to tackling all forms of poverty, and finding creative ways to do so.”

AM welcomes third party sale of puppies and kittens ban in Wales

5/8/2019

Gower Assembly Member, Rebecca Evans AM, welcomes the announcement that third party sales of puppies and kittens are set to be banned in Wales.

Rebecca Evans AM, said: “We like to think that we are a nation of animal lovers, but there is still more to do improve animal welfare. This move will help improve conditions, and help the public to make more informed choices when buying a pet.

“Online sales, impulse purchasing, breeder accountability and illegal importation of puppies are all concerns which have been raised with me; and when the Welsh Government put out its proposals for consultation, close to 500 responses were received, offering overwhelming support.”

Puppies and kitten sold by third parties are at greater risk of disease, a lack of socialisation and habituation, and the distress of being introduced to new and unfamiliar environments during multiple journeys.
