The Welsh Government has confirmed the NHS bursary will be extended in Wales for students starting their studies in September 2019. Gower Assembly Member Rebecca Evans AM has welcomed the announcement which means the full bursary package will continue to be available for those who commit in advance to work in Wales for up to two years post qualification. The bursary, for eligible student nurses, midwives and allied health professionals, was scrapped in England in 2017. Of the 2,180 students applying for the bursary in 2017/18, only 3% declined to work in Wales post-qualification, meaning the vast majority of students trained in Wales will work in Wales after their studies. Rebecca Evans AM said: “This is great news for the Welsh NHS and anyone looking to take up a training place. “Health care students are the future of our NHS, which is why - unlike in England - we are continuing to support them during their studies in return for a commitment to work in Wales. “This sends a clear message about how much we value our health care workforce and sets out our commitment to the future of our NHS” Rebecca Evans AM, Assembly Member for Gower, has met with Parentkind to hear about the important role that parents can play in their children’s education and school life. Parentkind is the new name for PTA UK - a charity that champions parents and seeks to build successful home-school relationships. Rebecca Evans said: “When it comes to how well a child does at school, parents really do matter. Research tells us that parental participation is a more powerful influence on a child’s attainment than family background, family size, or level of parental education.” During the event Mrs Evans joined with other Assembly Members in signing up to the Parentkind Pledge. Mrs Evans added: “In signing the pledge, I am showing that I consider the active participation of parents an essential ingredient in the success of our children’s education, and am setting out my commitment to supporting educational policies that bring homes and schools together.” Rebecca Evans AM, Assembly Member for Gower, is teaming up with LEASE to hold an advice session for Gower constituents, for which some places are still available. LEASE receives funding from the Welsh Government to provide expert advice to the public on residential leasehold and park homes. The event will take the form of a presentation by LEASE advisors, followed by a Q and A session. The event will take place on Friday 11th May, 10am-12noon, at Canolfan Gorseinon, Millers Drive, SA4 4QN. Places are strictly limited and will need to be booked in advance before Tuesday 1st May by emailing [email protected] Rebecca Evans AM has taken a key step towards helping end the stigma surrounding dementia by becoming a Dementia Friend and supporting Alzheimer's Society Cymru's vision of a dementia-friendly Wales. A Dementia Friend is someone who has gained a basic understanding about what it is like to have dementia and the small ways they can support someone living with the condition. Dementia Friends was launched in February 2013 by Alzheimer’s Society. It is a trailblazing initiative that aims to help people understand what it might be like to live with dementia and turn that understanding into action. Rebecca Evans AM said: “I've signed up to show my support for Dementia Friends, and am encouraging people in Gower to do the same. With a growing number of people living with dementia, it's more important than ever we all have a better understanding of the condition. “Dementia Friends is about giving people an understanding of dementia and the small things they can do that can make a difference to people living with dementia. From helping someone find the right bus to spreading the word about dementia, it can help make our local community a better place in which to live.” Sue Phelps, County Director of Alzheimer’s Society Cymru, said: “Dementia is one of the biggest health and care challenges our country faces - one that everyone must respond to. “We all have a part to play in improving the lives of people living with dementia and creating a dementia-friendly Wales. “We are delighted to see Rebecca Evans AM showing her support for Dementia Friends. Less than half of us think we know enough about dementia. Dementia Friends isn’t about creating experts, it’s about helping people understand a little bit more about what it’s like to live with the condition and then turn that understanding into action - anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend.” To find out more about becoming a Dementia Friend, please email Rebecca Evans at [email protected] Rebecca Evans AM, Assembly Member for Gower, is encouraging young people in her constituency to apply to take part in the British Council’s Future Leaders Connect. Future Leaders Connect is the global network for emerging policy leaders between the ages of 18 and 35. It is a long-term programme to build a community of emerging leaders from around the world who have big ideas and want to change the world through policy making. Last year, out of 11,000 applications from across the world, 50 future leaders were chosen to take part in the initiative, 2 of whom were applicants from Wales. Rebecca Evans AM said: “In many ways the world is getting smaller, and through new technologies we are able to work more fully with others from across the globe. It is vital that those young people who will be the future leaders and policy makers can work with an international outlook to overcome the challenges they will face on a local, national and international basis.” Applications are now open and will close on Sunday 13th May, at 23.59 UK time.
