No appointment necessary. Gower Assembly Member, Rebecca Evans AM, is supporting plans to give more people a say in local democracy. The plans reflect last year’s Welsh Government consultation on reforming the electoral system in Wales, which received almost 1,000 responses. Under the proposals, 16 and 17 year olds would be given the right to vote in council elections, along with all foreign nationals legally resident in Wales. Automatic registration would help ensure fewer people were missed from the electoral register. The Welsh Government also wants councils to pilot innovative new voting methods, which reflect people’s busy lives. These could include remote digital voting, mobile polling stations and voting at places like supermarkets, local libraries, leisure centres and railway stations. Rebecca Evans AM said “These changes are about engaging people in the political process - especially younger voters. Young people have a full stake in our society and are impacted by the choices that we make, so it is only right that they have a say. “I am also excited about exploring new ways of voting. Just because we have voted in a certain way in the past, doesn’t mean that is the only way. People’s lives and lifestyles are varied, and it should be as easy as possible for them to vote in a secure and accessible way.” Rebecca Evans AM will be holding an advice surgery, on Friday January 26th, 13.30 – 14.30, at Carmel vestry, Pontlliw. If you think Rebecca can be of assistance, please come along. No appointment necessary. Rebecca Evans AM, Assembly Member for Gower, has welcomed the news that TUI are to create 175 jobs in Swansea with the assistance of the Welsh Government. Responding to the news, Mrs Evans said: “This investment is good news for Swansea, and it is only made possible thanks to financial assistance worth more than half a million pounds from the Welsh Government Business Finance Grant. “I welcome this development, and am pleased to see Welsh Government working with businesses to improve employment and opportunity for the people of Swansea.” Rebecca Evans AM, Assembly Member for Gower, is encouraging constituents to have their say on the proposal to build a gas-fired power station at Abergelli Farm, Felindre. If the plans go ahead, the plant will provide back-up generation capacity which will operate flexibly to respond to short-term variation in customer demand and intermittent output from renewable power generation. It is anticipated that it will operate for no more than 1,500 hours per year. Mrs Evans said: “I have met with Abergelli Power to discuss the proposal in detail, and am keen that constituents with a view take the chance to have their say in the public consultation which starts today.” Constituents can have their say by phone, email, or post. Full information can be found at www.abergellipower.co.uk . There will also be a series of public exhibitions where people see the plans for themselves and put their questions to the developers. The High Sheriff awards provide an opportunity for the selfless dedication of our volunteers to be acknowledged and celebrated. Many young people devote significant amounts of time to volunteering and their circumstances can often be difficult because of caring responsibilities or the effects of unemployment on family life. A High Sheriff award which recognises the impact of their volunteering can give young people confidence in their abilities and inspire the next generation The contribution of adults who support young people is also recognised through the awards which can be given to individuals or groups. I look forward to receiving your nomination so that at this year’s awards ceremony there can be a real celebration of the impact of volunteering in West Glamorgan. Mrs. Louise Fleet - High Sheriff of West Glamorgan 2017/2018 The High Sheriff of West Glamorgan would like to recognise any individual (young person or adult) or group which has made, or is making, a sustained and VOLUNTARY effort to help their local community. Responding to the announcement that First Minister Carwyn Jones has committed to providing further investment to kick-start the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon, Rebecca Evans said: “The UK Government’s failure to deliver the tidal lagoon shows an appalling lack of vision and ambition for our area on their part. “In the absence of any commitment from the UK Government, I am delighted that the First Minister is showing strong leadership. In Welsh Labour, we recognise the potential of this transformative technology which would put Swansea at the forefront of a new global industry, delivering skilled jobs and reliable energy.” To mark International Women’s Day 2018, Chwarae Teg are launching ‘LeadHerShip’ - a day to give young women in Wales the opportunity to shadow their Assembly Member at the National Assembly for Wales.
The day will give participants the opportunity to meet with their Assembly Member, shadow them in their work and gain experience of the Assembly. Rebecca Evans AM, Assembly Member for Gower, said: “The Welsh Assembly has an encouraging record of women being elected to serve as AMs, but we must not be complacent. There is still work to be done. “Women make a huge contribution to communities across Wales every day, in so many ways. Shadowing days, like this one, provide women with a unique opportunity to explore whether putting themselves forward for an elected role is something that they would like to do.” The shadowing day will take place on Tuesday, 27th February 2018.
