Rebecca Evans AM, the newly elected Assembly Member for Gower, will be joining other fundraisers and volunteers to WALK IT for Crohn’s and Colitis UK as they walk either a 5k or 10k route along Swansea Bay waterfront.
The WALK IT event, which will be launched by Geraint Davies MP, commences from the Junction Cafe in Black Pill where walkers will follow the coastline path and enjoy magnificent views across Swansea Bay. Speaking ahead of the walk, Mrs Evans said: “More than 300,000 people in the UK suffer from a form of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) such as Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis, yet it is largely a hidden disease, and one that causes stigma, fear and isolation. "Taking part in event such as WALK IT event will, I hope, raise vital funds and awareness and acceptance of IBD. It is thought that many people with the condition go undiagnosed and suffer in silence. This walk shows that there is no need to be embarrassed or afraid of seeking help, because you are not alone.” At the registration point will be an array of food and drink, music, entertainment and more. There will also be a child's paddling pool and the nearby beaches to enjoy! Starting the event Geraint Davies MP said: “I was thrilled to launch Crohn’s and Colitis UK’s WALK IT in Swansea, and to see so many people taking part. “As well as a fantastic opportunity to raise much needed funds for charity, WALK IT was also a chance for people to come together to raise awareness and show support to the thousands of people living with these lifelong, debilitating, and often little understood conditions.”  Rebecca Evans AM, newly elected Assembly Member for Gower, has attended the official opening of the new Gowerton Primary School.
The school, which the pupils have been in since the start of the school term, was developed jointly funded by Swansea Council and the Welsh Government, and has united pupils on one site for the first time in the school's history. The new £6.8 million Gowerton Primary School has been abuzz with activity since lessons got under way at the new school and it is already a hit, with pupils and staff saying they are feeling inspired by the light and airy modern environment. Remarking on the new school, Mrs Evans said: “As well as providing pupils with a fantastic, modern learning environment, the new school will offer improved community facilities and outdoor spaces for sports and recreation. "It represents a significant investment in the children of Gowerton on the part of the Welsh Government and Swansea Council."  Rebecca Evans AM, the newly elected Assembly Member for the Gower, is taking part in this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week, which runs from the 16-22 May, by highlighting the benefits of building healthy relationships for young people.
Mrs Evans has previously called for action on promoting an understanding of healthy relationships for young people as part of her work on Internet safety. This was picked up in the Welsh Labour Manifesto, which promises to deliver "more action to tackle the stigma of mental illness, increase access to talking therapies and promote better emotional health in schools." Alongside this, a taskforce will be established to explore ways of improving behaviour, wellbeing and mental health in all education settings. Speaking on the importance of Mental Health Awareness Week, Mrs Evans said: “The theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness week is Relationships. "Good relationships are fundamental to our health and wellbeing, and it is important that young people are helped to understand what a healthy relationship is, and what their expectations should be of themselves and of others. "This awareness raising week is a good chance to put healthy relationships high on the agenda." Mental Health Awareness Week runs from the 16th – 22nd May and is supported by a cross-section of Mental Health charities including Mind, Hafal and the Mental Health Foundation who are asking the public to go the extra mile in prioritising their relationships. They said: “We are calling on people to make a relationship resolution: to assess how much time we actively commit to building and maintaining good relationships, and to ask whether we can invest more in being present with and listening to friends, family and colleagues." Gower's newly elected Assembly Member, Rebecca Evans, has sent her congratulations to the staff, governors, parents and pupils of Penllergaer Primary School after Estyn inspectors gave the school a good inspection report.
Rebecca Evans AM said: "The good report is a tribute to the hard work of everyone involved in the life of the school. "I am particularly pleased to see the report make special mention of the good progress being made by pupils on developing literacy and numeracy right across the curriculum. The report also notes that the school provides a highly supportive and caring environment for all pupils. "The inspectors say that the school has excellent prospects for further improvement, building on the good work of the teaching staff and governors, as well as the partnership working with parents and the community more widely. As the successful Labour candidates in the National Assembly for Wales elections, we would like to thank the electorate of each constituency in the area covered by the Evening Post for showing confidence in us. It is a tremendous privilege to be your voice in the Assembly. Now we are elected we will continue to work for the people of our constituencies and the wider region. We will do all we can to support the Welsh steel industry, the universities in the area and the local economy. Mrs Evans, who has a long-standing interest in mental health issues having previously been the Chair of the Cross Party Group at the National Assembly, met with carers at their Big Carers’ Tea Break. The event is driven by carers and supported by the mental health charity Hafal in partnership with Bipolar UK, Diverse Cymru, Carers Cymru, and Crossroads Mid and West Wales. The tea break gives carers a chance to take timeout, meet up and enjoy an afternoon tea whilst being able to chat with and provide mutual support to fellow carers. Mrs Evans said: “People who care for someone with a mental illness can experience particular challenges. “These Carer’s Tea Breaks are an opportunity to show carers that they are appreciated, a chance for carers to meet with others in similar situations, and a chance for carers to find out about the enhanced rights that they now have as a result of the Social Services and Wellbeing Act which was passed by the last Welsh Labour Government in the Assembly.” These events will be at the core of a wider mental health campaign over this Summer which will:
